From Figma Design Systems to WordPress Themes

A reliable handoff translates design intent into reusable theme foundations while giving content editors predictable, accessible building blocks.

Before implementation, inventory the Figma library and identify the decisions that affect the content model: page templates, component variants, responsive behavior, typography, color, spacing, and interaction states. Ask which elements should be fixed by the design system and which need to be configurable by editors.

Translate tokens into theme foundations

Map color, typography, spacing, and layout values to CSS custom properties or the WordPress theme settings used by the project. Keep naming semantic where possible, so a token describes its role rather than repeating a one-off visual value. Document exceptions instead of quietly adding near-duplicate values.

Build components around real content needs

Group recurring patterns into reusable blocks or patterns, but do not turn every visual detail into a separate control. Define sensible defaults, field constraints, and preview states. Model structured content—such as services, products, or team members—as data when it needs to be reused or queried consistently.

Include responsive and accessible states

  • Specify narrow-screen layouts, text wrapping, image crops, and navigation behavior.
  • Use semantic HTML, keyboard-operable controls, visible focus, and appropriate labels.
  • Check contrast, reduced-motion preferences, and validation/error states.
  • Agree how editors handle long titles, missing images, and translated or variable-length content.

Review the editor experience as part of the build

Compare the front end with the design at key breakpoints and test blocks in the WordPress editor using realistic content. A theme is not complete if editors cannot safely maintain pages or if the implementation only matches a single idealized screenshot.
